Belly Rubs

I've seen a lot of mentions recently of research that supports the idea that dog behavior is not equivalent to wolf behavior. To me, this just makes common sense. An awful lot of dogs adore belly rubs and back scratches from people and are very motivated to get them, but as far as I know, there is no equivalent wolf behavior.

What do you think?

Its not an issue that is specifically about "belly rubs". What you are asking is "In nature, do Wolves seek pleasure". The answer of course is yes. Dogs and wolves are inextricably linked. Saying one has nothing to do with the other is absurd. Its like saying your childhood had nothing to do with who you are as an adult. (Okay, not as extreme, but you get the idea.) Dog's have not become 'humanized' but rather humans have tried to impose themselves on the innate urges dogs have- the very ones that are so deeply rooted in their nature. Julst look at pack mentality- it exists in the wolf world and in the dog world-- and is ever so powerful.

Cool post as for me. I'd like to read more about that theme. Thanks for sharing that information.

I'd have to agree with you. Up in the Klondike back in 46 I had me a little too much applejack while thawing out around the camp fire. A wolf limped into camp, a looking for scraps and such. He was a brazen thing but aparrently he was injured, otherwise he would have never come up so close. Like I say, I had a little too much fire water so I patted that old wolf right on the back. He just kind of looked at me, and of course had I been sober I probably would have seen he wasent no thing to mess with. Then I rubbed his belly. That was a big mistake. Never rub a wolfs belly. He reached down under his front legs and grabbed my hand in his mouth. Then he jerked me so hard I lituraly flew over into the campfire. Luckily my buddies was just coming back into camp and they dragged me out of the fire. The wolf took off. To this day, if I see anyone about to do something stupid, I say "You wouldn't scratch a wolfe's belly, would yuh?"
